3.0      General Business Arising

3.1      King Opal –

King Opal’s Opal Association Membership to be cancelled.

A registered letter will be sent to King opal informing them of our decision and requesting them not to use the Opal Association name or logo. The decision was unanimous with some phone calls from members taken also.

Moved – Paul Sedawie

Seconded – Wayne Sedawie

3.2      IOJDAA show in Lightning Ridge –

Sally Patel moved a motion to support the show as the international jewellery show is this year for $1500. Some members felt that the organizers might like to consider an open competition section as well as the free shape jewellery so this will be suggested to them.

Moved – Sally Patel

Seconded – Patrik Ujszaszi

4.0       General Business

4.1       Opal Nomenclature

A discussion was held about the definition of Black Opal N5 to N6, as to whether it should be called dark Opal or semi black Opal. – We voted by a show of hands and 70% were for semi black and 30% for dark opal.

We agreed to send out a letter to the LRMA; CPMA; QBOA informing them of the process made and asking for any submissions they might want to make.

4.2       Opal Circuit in Tuscon & Australia

A media release was sent out and some magazines published the article about the Opal Circuit but many wanted some advertising and then they will do a large spread. We will have to consider this for next year to promote it more.

The Opal trail in Tucson has had a good response. Some members mentioned that they will still advertise their companies separately as well as in the group add. Can you advise us if you intend to do this as we may be able to have 3 pages near the front of the magazine which will be a benefit to all exhibitors?

4.3       Synthetic & Imitation Opal

There has been no reply from the trade tourism minister about protecting our retail market here in Australia. Some members mentioned that we might like to consider approaching the ABC Tv shows regarding this matter. Let us know what you think.

Meeting Closed at 2pm

OPAL ASSOCIATION MEETING

23 MAY AT 1 PM AT 25 SURFERS AV

MERMAID WATERS QLD

AGENDA

-Decision on  King opals membership.

-OJDAA sponsorship-two years ago we donated 1500$ should we continue as it’s the International jewellery competition at the Lightning Ridge show on 27 July. This show benefits all members of the  opal association.

-Should we use the term semi black or dark opal ?

– Discussion on the new  opal nomenclature.

-We are still waiting for a reply from the trade minister in regards to synthetic opals  bring sold to the inbound Chinese market and protecting our industry. Should we consider approaching a tv station.? The ABC did there own research some years ago saying how synthetic opals affects the opal industry but I feel the situation is much worse now due to the high secret commissions..

OPAL CIRCUIT IN TUCSON

There has been a huge response to placing a double page add in the Tucson show guide with a circuit of where members -type of opal -parking ect. Some members have said they will also advertise there own adds as well as the circuit. Can you please notify us if you wish to do so as if we book 3 pages we can be closer to the front of the book which is a huge advantage.

OPAL CIRCUIT IN AUSTRALIA

We received a large reply to our news feed on the up coming opal shows but many magazines asked for some advertising-I think we should re do it next year and consider some advertising.

CONFERNCE CALL

To those members who cant make it we should try a conference call-please register before hand.

Regards Paul Sedawie
